Maelo Cintron was born in Fajardo, a town in the eastern region of Puerto Rico. He is the son of Ramon and Elisa Cintron, and is the eldest of three boys.

Maelo and his family moved from Puerto Rico to New York City when he was 5 years old. He discovered art during his teenage years and never looked back. He was entirely self-taught, and his love of the craft lead to what would later become a fruitful artistic career.

Following this trajectory, Maelo did a lot of freelance work as an exceptional artist when he got older. His masterful illustrations blessed the covers of many books and magazines for publishing companies such as Castle Publishing, Tower Books, Dell Publishing, Tor Books, Warren Magazine, Pocket Books and Skywald Publications.

His work for Skywald Publications earned him the nickname "Macabre" Maelo Cintron due to his involvement with comics and stories of the horror genre. In the 70s, Maelo worked on a series of black and white horror comics titled "Nightmare", "Psycho" and "Scream", which later became known as the Horror Mood.

More recently, Maelo was the Cover Painter and Illustrator for a comic series that was published in 2013, titled "The Human Gargoyles". He worked alongside writers Alan Hewetson and Richard Arndt, as well as George E. Warner who was responsible for the lettering and design. This series garnered praise from a variety of critics, including one Ramsey Campbell who said"...it drops its living gargoyles into contemporary America as symbols, and the alienating juxtaposition works, maybe because Cintron gives the gargoyles a sad dignity and alieness without sentamentalism".

He currently owns his own publishing company by the name of Bleeding Moon Comics.

In his current phase of life, Maelo Cintron dedicates a substantial portion of his time to the dual pursuits of work and family. Blessed with six children and ten grandchildren, he holds a particular fondness for family gatherings. His favorite pasttime is hanging out with his grandkids, teaching them how to draw, paint, play chess and tune guitars. Moments like these, especially if they include a cold Heineken and a Bob Dylan song, are when Maelo is truly in his element.
